Obadiah - Pride Has Deceived You

June 27, 2010 PM
Minor Prophets #4

In some ways the book of Obadiah is the most easily overlooked book in the Bible. It is the shortest book of the Old Testament and it contains prophesy about the long forgotten nation of Edom. Yet the message of Obadiah resonates in my heart as it gives clear warning of the danger and consequences of pride. Pride is deceptive, because while we feel like all is secure, in reality, pride isolates us from God.

The multi-generational church is complicated. Paul says to us through Titus that the church has all kinds of differences within it; age, social status and gender to name three. But there are more, and these are often undervalued, missed or overlooked with the usual responses; hurt, misunderstanding and fatigue. First, the people in a generational church don't start attending the church with the same backgrounds. Frankly, we have come from different places, with many different experiences that have shaped us, wounded us, and made teaming together a challenge. Secondly, rarely are all of us in the same development zone. There are many layers of spiritual, social and life development going on throughout the multi-generational church. But in the multi-generational church, under God's design, leadership has huge advantage. He gifts it with strength, variety, diversity and opportunity that single generational churches can't match. God has given us huge benefits that Titus challenges us to accept and use for God's glory.

Open the Eyes of my Heart

So often my spiritual eyesight is dull. I know the truths of God in my brain, but I fail to embrace them with my heart. Paul knew this when he prayed for the church in Ephesus. He knew that the teaching of truth was not enough and that he had to pray the truth in to the hearts of the people. This morning, my prayer is that our hearts will be enlightened by God, that we will more fully appreciate spiritual reality and that we will be challenged to pray in a new way.

Multigenerational churches are new territory. While multi-ethnic is a very fashionable focus, multigenerational? Not so much. At one time, when change was slower, people living as extended families all attended the same church. Now churches are stratified and choose a specific generation as a target group and are virtually a single generational church. If Churches are brave enough to add multigenerational to their vision or mission statement, they usually mean we are trying to get younger, but it‟s not working. To be truly multigenerational, means that a Church intentionally embraces all the generations, as it embraces all the other social levels or clans in our city. Economics, social status (eg single, married, kids, not kids etc) education, and vocations are just a few of the variables in our city. The great news is that God is ahead of us, but His plan and the weight of responsibility that He assigns might surprise us. God‟s plan is in fact a kind of top down system; mature to immature, trained to untrained, committed to uncommitted, old to young.
