Whatever fills your eye forms your view. A dime is small, until its held millimeters from your eyeball. Up close the dime fills your field of vision and eclipses everything else. Our dreams, ideas, and even our fears can do the same. They might not be in our eye, but lodged deeply in our heart they not only inform our brains, but they keep our attention and life direction moving steadily down that track. Our life focus changes through our wills. We first decide and then begin to choose to consistently move to the new focus. As we follow the work of God the Holy Spirit in Acts 1, we understand how the Ascension of Jesus turned the disciples away from what they wanted from God to doing what God wanted from them.

Power to Change

Power can mean many things, including capacity, authority, ability, or feat. When the Bible says to the Christian that we are given power through the Holy Spirit, we naturally want to know what this means. If all of us have this power, and we didn’t have it before, how will it be noticeable? How will we see it? Will others see it in us? In part 2 of our new series in Acts, ‘Led by the Spirit’, Pastor Dave will explore what the promise of Jesus to his followers means to us.

The Holy Spirit is the quiet backseat driver of the Trinity. He rarely draws attention to himself, but he is the person of God who fills us, baptizes us, gifts us, encourages us, and leads us. He is active in the life of His people. What might surprise us is that He does it all while rarely making us aware of Himself. He makes us aware of the Father's love, increases our knowledge and experience of Christ's lavish grace, and enables us to fit into the life of the Church, Christ's bride. As we begin our study of Acts, we hear Christ preparing his followers for the event that forever changed the work of God in humankind: the promise of the Holy Spirit.

Power Politics

To what do we bend our knee, lower our head, or give our obedience? It’s tough for us in a free democratic society to consider the issues of Power, Authority, Obedience, Submission and Trust. We quickly turn to the exceptions with a list of questions: can the rules be changed, ignored, amended? Who can make rules for me? What are our rights... and by rights we mean the freedom to run our own lives without interference. We prize independence. It comes as a surprise to the free and democratic citizen who has decided to follow God that He influences the world and our city through his appointments and requirements. Today, we will learn what it means in God's eyes to be good citizens of our nation while we are good followers of Jesus.
