The Holy Spirit makes us Better Together

The gospel of Jesus will transform us. We are moved by faith in him from a place of darkness to the place of light; from separation from God to reconciliation with God. The gospel we receive forms us into the family of God. Now we must make a second choice: to walk together. Much of our relationship with God is formed through relating to the others in his family. While we believe we are better because of Christ and our faith in him, we can sometimes doubt if we will be or can become better together with those around us. The Church as your family of God is foundational to the Bible’s teaching. God gives us promises to receive and challenges us to align ourselves to his purpose, not to fight or flee his plan.

The Holy Spirit Forms the Church

The Holy Spirit uses God’s Word to form us individually and collectively as disciples. We will discover that our character is shaped and our culture is formed as we choose to be aligned by truth and Spirit. In this morning’s message in Acts 2, we will see how repentance is God’s continuing plan to mature us as followers. Re-alignment is both negative (some things are stopped, rejected and killed) and positive (some things are added, nurtured and valued). We will learn a simple plan for maintaining our growth edge as followers of Christ.

The Holy Spirit forms in us a proper view of Jesus

A proper view of Jesus forms the foundation of our mission in the world. The degree to which we are confused or unsure about the person and work of Jesus is the degree to which we are ineffective as his  representatives, and fail to achieve his mission. Many people today think that knowing Jesus is the means of becoming secure or happy in their lives, and they treat faith in Christ as a means of self actualization (becoming a better person).  However, the Bible tells us that Christ is not our Saviour to make us happy, but to rescue us from our rebellion against God.

The Spirit intends us to benefit from the Bible

Do we really believe the Bible? All of it? Do we believe that the God who speaks in the Bible is willing, able and ready to speak to us? Do we believe that God will heal us and others through our prayers? Do we anticipate that God will perform his miracles to demonstrate his presence, power and blessing among us? Or, have we settled for much less as we read the Bible? Is it possible that we read the Bible with a detached kind of indifference? Do we filter it to find moral principles that boost our discipline but do not deliver us from evil, or lead us to be on mission with Him? A remarkable feature of Peter’s message is that he knew heaps of the OT and that he was willing under the Holy Spirit’s influence to not only recite it, but apply it openly in his city. Fresh power based on the Word of God, through the Holy Spirit.
