Create Standards, Not Rules

July 7, 2013

What unites us in Christ are his standards, and what divides us are our rules.  As we understand the gospel, we can choose to serve others rather than demand our own benefits at other’s cost.  This is what Jesus demonstrated through the cross and what he asks of us in our faith community, his Church.   Today, Pastor Dave Marttunen continues his summer series in the book of Romans with a message based on the last section of Romans 14.  It is titled Create Standards, Not Rules, and will explore what it means to be part of God’s team through faith in the gospel of Jesus.

Accounting for Yourself

Churches don’t always agree on everything!  Has your experience caught up with that reality?  In doctrine, or things essential, we must have agreement to maintain our work and to call each other to obedience in Christ.  But in non-essentials, we have love.  This means we can agree to disagree over some very large issues because there is more that unites us than divides us in Jesus.  The Bible gives us clear guidelines about how we are to disagree and keep our faith.  Using two illustrations; eating meat and drinking wine, the Bible outlines how we are to love each other in disagreements while holding  faith.  The clear line that gives us freedom is this; “judge not another man’s servant.”  As we learn to account for our own lives and to have love between us in Christ, we will learn what it means to agree to disagree in non-essentials.  This is part 34 in our Summer series, "Rooted in Romans."

Today, Pastor Marttunen begins the fourth summer installment in the book of Romans.

Sports teams, military units, and adventure players know that wearing the right gear and getting it on early is essential to their triumph.  Poor gear and poor preparation consistently produce poor results.  This morning from Romans 13 (part 33), Pastor Dave reminds us that we are on mission and must prepare early and well to complete God’s mission in our city.
