The Best Life Ever - Colossians 3

The key to „The Best Life Ever‟ is summarized by this: simple grace triumphs over utter darkness. Knowing Jesus changes our identity, links us to God‟s purpose and establishes us as those who have God‟s provision and protection throughout life. „The Best Life‟ means that other kinds of life exist, but at a level that is lower than what it could be. When we know how much we are valued by God, our internal identity changes which enables us to live well in any circumstance. Those who follow Christ bring hope to any situation because our life force, our energy and our purpose are permanently linked to Christ; his death and resurrection. His grace triumphs over our darkness!

How are your investments? Is your portfolio good? If you were given a large amount of money and a large amount of time what would you do with it? How is that different than what you do with what you now have? Would you consider yourself a risk taker? Of any investment that you can make there is one that is most important. It will take risk and more than just time and money… but the return is worth it.

There is precious little that we can count on in this world. Economies crash, relationships end and even the ground may not be stable under our feet. In this world of uncertainty it may seem unlikely that we can have any true spiritual stability. When Jesus portrays himself as the good shepherd he is offering us an opportunity to rest our souls safe within his fold. Have you heard the voice of the shepherd? Do you feel secure?

While we may feel overwhelmed knowing that God expects us to be fruitful, Jesus reminds us that God does not so much want us to do good works for him as to do good works with him. As a branch must remain connected to the vine, we find that we are fruitful when we connect with Christ.

In an era of western culture where a focus on self is so pervasive, how can the church proclaim and live the other-centered focus taught and lived out by Jesus? Of all people, Jesus had every right to feel entitled…he was the Son of God. Yet he gave up everything to save humanity. What shift in attitude could help us to reflect the example of Jesus spoken of in Philippians 2:5-11? “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who being in very nature God did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant.”

I know nothing about true hunger. I have never had a serious worry about food. I know something of the satisfaction of a solid meal after the empty stomach of a hard day’s work. I know more about the pleasure of well made food. When Jesus portrays himself as bread, do you hear him as one starving for nourishment, as one feeling empty inside or as a contented connoisseur with a taste for more? Or has your appetite been spoiled by junk food?
