Playing Nice in a Naughty World

When the Bible uses the term 'world', it consistently refers to the broken and bound since Adam's fall.  The world is in alignment with all that resists and resents God's rule.  It is also the object of God's affection and redemption.  The world is our temporary home.  The Christian is a citizen of Heaven but a resident in the world.  How we are to live as ambassadors of the new order, but residents in the broken mess of now, is the conclusion of Romans 12.  We are to live as those who have been 'mercied' by God.  We are agents, messengers, examples of hope.  We can live above the mess as we choose to God's ways above our natural ways.  Today's message is part of Pastor Marttunen's summer series; Rooted in Romans.

Glocal Engagement - Touching the World Locally and Globally

August 19, 2012
Geordon Rendle

God´s commission to His people, to His Church, Central Baptist Church, is that we would live and minister GLOCALly. What does that mean? Well, that we really need to read the instructions carefully. We will see this morning that much of what Christ calls us to hinges on a very simple little three-letter word - AND. We are to engage the world both locally AND globally. Woven throughout this conversation, we will celebrate THEOStimonies, God-stories from Youth for Christ around the Americas.

Fruits advertise their interior. You know if a melon is ready, an apple is ripe, or a banana is worth biting. Their exterior tells the truth about the inside. But people hide the truth. They look to be one thing while hiding a different interior. Today, we will discover that the mercy of God is what fuels authentic Christianity. Religion tries to control God, but Christianity receives what God alone can do. When we receive grace from God we can live out grace.

The Amazing Race

During the Olympics we witness countless stories of the human spirit, personal talent, overcoming adversity, inspiration, and sacrifice. Almost all these stories are drawn from the pursuit of excellence and often first prize: the gold medal - a cherished, but temporary prize. World and Olympic records have been broken, setting new standards of achievement and new goals for future generations to pursue. Records are made to be broken, and gold, silver and bronze will eventually tarnish and fade. As we look to God's Word for the inspiration that motivates us towards the crown that lasts forever, what sacrifices are we willing to make? What stories of inspiration and overcoming adversity can we draw on to spur us forward to honor God with each and every moment He gives us in this life? What role does God play in all of this?
