Everyone likes to have power in their corner. We naturally pull rank, lower the boom, exercise authority, and claim superiority. Kids do it; “my Dad is bigger than your Dad…” It is easy to trot out the power tools when we think we are right (don’t we always?) and especially when we want an immediate or important (to us) result. In today’s text, honest, well meaning followers of Jesus use the Bible to support their actions. Nothing wrong there, except the command; Wait. We will learn through this story in the life of the early Church that we can mean well and fall short. We can have the Word of God and leave out the Spirit of the Word.
