The First and the Last

July 25, 2010 PM

Mark Twain once observed, “It’s not what I don’t know about the Bible that bothers me, it’s what I do know.” No doubt he had in mind some of the counter-culture values Jesus calls us to embrace as His followers. Through His parable of the Workers in the Vineyard, Jesus calls us to adjust our thinking about our worth and our work by
teaching that God’s sovereign grace and goodness trump our sense of equity and fairness.

Many designed machines don’t work. There is a gap between pictured and modeled. The drawings exist, but when the machine is manufactured, it can’t deliver. The first flying machines were like that; fancy ideas that didn’t work. They looked great, and fueled the imagination, but they just didn’t work. Today, as we continue to study the letter to Titus, we will learn that God has designed our salvation to be a work in progress. We are not only designed to become something, but we are designed by Him to do something. Our salvation comes in work clothes not party dress. We, as God’s children, are given clear working drawings by Him that, when followed, lead us to activity.

Micah - What the Lord Requires

July 18, 2010 PM
Minor Prophets #6

David Dawson

Audio

Our study in Micah focuses on the Lord's requirement that we act justly, love mercy and walk humbly. My hope is that we will find these to be a glad response to grace, rather than an insecure attempt to curie God's favour. There is a certain confidence when you are in a secure relationship. When you are loved, your efforts to please the other person can flow out of a genuine heart rather than a nervous performance made to secure a doubted affection.

How can it be that intelligent, engaged, trusted, dependable and good people can forget important dates, events and promises? The answer is not complicated. The immediate displaces the long term. The urgent dislodges the important. The thing near, touching, and loud, distracts us from the things which are less near, touching and loud but more valuable. All of us live this reality. What is the solution? Reminders. Today, as we continue in our series on Titus: Thriving in the City, we learn that God is big into positive reminders. God’s positive reminders are our gateway to maintaining a life of purpose. God’s reminders move us into good thinking and excellent living through the rediscovery, reapplication and renewal of His mercy in us.

Jonah - Have You Any Right to be Angry?

Minor Prophets #5

Jonah is easily the most familiar of the minor prophets. In fact he is likely one of the most recognizable characters of the Old Testament. This may be a little embarrassing for Jonah, because his portrayal in the book is far from flattering. Jonah's attitude is almost exactly counter to the heart of God. The challenge for us as we read this book is to examine our hearts and consider whether we are tracking with God's compassion or Jonah's anger.

Some people think that grace is a one way street; to them grace means exclusively that God’s goodness flows into them. Grace to a mind like this is focused on what we get. Biblically, grace has another direction that is equally important. Grace does more than benefit and reform the receiver. Grace effectively motivates and develops the receiver into a powerhouse of accomplishment.Grace always leads to good works—always. The outflow of grace in the life of the believer is always evidence by the fruit of good works.Today, as our thinking is fueled by God's grace, we will discover fresh inclination towards action that honours Him.

One of the best loved prophecies of the OT is Isaiah 53, which predicts the need for the suffering of Jesus Christ as the means of our atonement. As we meet to celebrate the Table of the Lord, we will consider all that Jesus accomplished as promised in this amazing prophecy.

Geordon Rendle, Youth for Christ Americas Area Director, will share with us some THEOStimonies of what God is doing in the lives of teenages throughout the Western Hemisphere. There is an entire generation that is in need of our help. God the Father gives us an example of what to say to them - "This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him" (Matthew 17:5). Geordon recently summitted Aconcagua at 22,891 feet and he knows for a fact that "on teh mountain, the Lord provides" (Genesis 22:14).
